Prop B

Prop B

About Prop B

Prop B wants to place a limit in the amount of terms a supervisor of the county board of supervisors can serve. The main reason why they want to amend this proposition is because it is noticeable that many incumbents have been on the board for an extensive amount of time. These incumbents are gathering up a large amounts of money where they are no longer using it for the benefit of the county, they become attached thinking that the money belongs to them. This results in knocking out all the competition for a re-election. There hasn’t been a noticeable change in the to issues that San Diego faces such as wild fires, traffic, and healthcare. That is why many people feel that limiting the amount of time a supervisor could serve would bring in newer leaders and counsel members that could address the problems that our city is facing.

VOTE YES on prop. B

Voting YES on proposition B will bring many new changes to the San Diego community. Not only will it improve the massive traffic we have to deal with, but it will also open a window to better funding our county's education. Prop B proposes a two year limit on position of a supervisor of the San Diego County board member; I believe this will be a great way to bring new leadership as well as new ideas into improving San Diego County. Over the years there have been the same leaders and San Diego hasn’t found the way to decrease the traffic that occurs because there is a lack of funding due to the incumbents that are taking over the money. The lack of funding relates to the different things that the current leaders are using to spend their money on such as preparing for the next election in order for them to get re-elected. Placing a limit on the terms that can be served would give the new candidates a better chance in getting elected instead of the incumbents having all the power which is usually the case. I think that passing prop B there will be much more funding headed towards our education committee saying so there will be less budget cuts at schools and more programs that simulate the arts and music talents of a child.
Although I do not find myself as being much or a Democrat I feel that everyone should get the same opportunity in getting elected to become part of the board of supervisors. I feel that incumbents tend to build up too much power that the people have no saying in what they want because they see a man that has a lot of power and money to get re-elected without their vote. This proposition would benefit me because it would mean that there would be a chance of getting new people onto the board and working to make San Diego a better county providing more funding towards education and clearing our freeways.Although I come from a republican base I feel that education in San Diego should be given more funding than what it has been receiving in order to give children the best education they can get in order to complete with other foreign students in college.

Two Thumbs UP for Prop B

Reasons why I would vote for prop B:

  • The board of supervisors do need some diversity so that they can acurately represent San Deigo. There needs to be diversity racially wise and political ideology wise, especially since currently all five are white Republicans.

  • I believe that 15-16 years of a term is not appropiate because then there is no change in how things are run. Its is too much power for so long that not a lot of things get done because the supervisors get comfortable, start doing nothing, and start thinking that our money is thiers.

  • They can take advantage of the power and start doing many things that might not be fair to the people. They start serving thier supporters instead of the people. Power becomes abused instead of wisely used.

  • They also wouldn't be giving other people the opportunity to gain experience in a politically enriching position. It is very important that all qualified people get the opportunity to hold

  • Allowing term limits would bring new talent and new ideas, promoting competition and community involvement.

  • Term limits work as seen with the President, Mayor, Governor, and City Council. The Board of Supervisors should be treated the same and should be required a term limit.

Who’s voting for what?!

FOR and AGAINST prop B by Zoar Gonzalez

Vote YES!
Prop B is intended to bring a change to our county, San Diego has had the same council members for a extensive period of time. There needs to be a limit to the time served as a council. For an example there is less funding for our teachers, fire fighters and nurses, voting YES will not only increase the funding but it will also mean that the members in the council will have a two year limit. After the two years there will be a chance for another leader to take charge and only improve on what the previous leader started. In other words many democrats are choosing to pass this proposition, many democrats feel that the council members are taking advantage of the position they hold. These incumbents are making so much money where they start to play favorites; giving money to the corporations and companies of their choice. Our county has grown in democratic supporters and the county supervisors tend to be fiscal conservatives because they tend to have secure jobs and they know where the money is going, then again they have forgotten that the money they receive comes for us taxpayers.

Vote NO!
Prop B takes the voter’s power to vote for the best candidate, Prop B is a waste of money it is evident that it did not work in Sacramento. The people already hold the power to chose which council leader benefits them, if there is a council member that is not doing his/her job the people can vote to have them taken off the board. The passage of Prop B would limit the power citizens have as it is because it forces them to choose new leaders every two years not allowing the current leader to continue their plans. More Republican based individuals would reject Prop B, the San Diego County Taxpayers Association strongly oppose the passage of prop B because it would mean that the citizens would have to pay large amounts of money in order to implement new laws or plans that the incoming leaders may have. The military also opposes to the proposition B because it would mean that they will take away the right to import heavy object through the second port, which the military relies heavily on. Prop B would cancel the plan of making a port directly for military use for importation of heavy materials. The money that the taxpayers collect would go towards others things such attractions.

What is Proposition B?

Proposition B is directed toward the San Diego Board of Supervisors. Currently there are five supervisors on the board, all divided up into five districts, which are Greg Cox (District 1), Ron Roberts (District 4), Diane Jacob (District 2), Bill Horn (District 5), and Pam Slater-Price who is the chair (District 3). They habdle budget matters, policy issues, and intergovernmental and legislative matters in San Diego. They earn more than state legislatures yet they don't two to three term limits.

The Service Employees International Union Local 221, a labor union, is the principal sponsor and financier of Proposition B. Proposition B states that the board of supervisors should have thier term length limited to only two four year terms. It has always been that board supervisors served life long terms, but with this proposition that will be changed. A reason for term limits is that currently there are only white Americans on the board with no diversity, which is not what San Diego is. San Diego is diversity.

Another reason for this proposition is that when these supervisors have life long terms, power becomes easily controlled and managed by only a few. Each and every one of the supervisors have held 15-18 year terms so far and if proposition B goes into affect voters will decide to either vote them in or out. If people vote for them then they will have the chance to serve two more terms of four years each.

There are currently no Democrats on the board. This is why Democrats are urging the need for term limits while Republicans are demanding to leave it as it is. If the measure is approved, San Diego will become the 7th county -- out of 58 counties -- to impose term limits on its county supervisors. There are not many sides to this proposition yet it is one that is controversial and can change the future of San Diego.
